SCUBA TANK MAINTENANCE

Scuba tanks and valves are commonly constructed using an alluminium/steel tank, with a chrome plated brass fitted valve.

This is the perfect environment, in salt water, for corrosion between dissimilar metals.

In Australia national standards require that all tanks be both visually and hydrostatically tested every 12 months.

Corrosion and pitting around the valve base degrades the quality of the tank, reducing the lifespan and ultimately leading to an unserviceable situation.

PREVENTION IS BETTER THAN CURE!  A few simple steps with tank maintenance and Tef-Gel can save you the entire replacement cost of your tank.

  • Visual inspection shows corrosion
  • Remove valve
  • Expose corrosion on top of tank

  • Clean corroded area, ensuring no contaminants enter tank
  • Apply a thin bead of Tef-Gel
  • Smear Tef-Gel making sure none enters o-ring groove

  • Refit valve
  • Wipe excess from area

    Enjoy your diving!

Jetstream Story and Video
Built in Brisbane in 2000 this 12mtr vessel is constructed of an alluminium painted hull with a fitted outer set of tubes and cover.

The cover is attached via two sets of bolt rope rails attached with machine screws to the top of the bulwarks and the outboard planning strake of the hull. The bottom set of bolt rope rails are situated so that they are regularly exposed to salt water.

During the original construction the boat was built and fitted out using Tef-Gel™ anti corrosive lubricant including the fixing of the bolt rope rails.

Four years later during maintenance the outer tube cover was replaced. This required the removal of top and bottom bolt rails both port and starboard and all the machine screws.

The following brief video clips were taken by the crew during repairs.

As you can immediately see for yourself the screws came out with ease using only a screwdriver and spanner, there are no signs of corrosion or blistering paint around the screws, despite four years of commercial work in a salt water environment.
